Chickens and the Weather: Drama, Drama, Drama!

Chickens may not carry umbrellas or check the weather app, but they absolutely have opinions about the skies overhead. And if you’ve ever tried keeping a flock through a Southern summer (or a tropical downpour), then you already know—Mother Nature sets the stage, and your chickens deliver the full Broadway performance.

Rain? That’s a Hard No.

When the first drop falls, it’s like someone rang the Chicken Alarm System. One moment, they’re scratching the dirt and bullying a bug. The next, it’s full-blown code red—wings flapping, squawks flying, and a beeline made straight for the coop like it’s a tornado shelter.

Some huddle in the corner. Others pace and mutter like grumpy old ladies on bingo night. You can practically hear them saying, “I told you it was gonna rain, Mabel.”
Enter the Misting System: Unexpected Betrayal

Now, on the other end of the spectrum, let’s talk about those scorching summer days when even the grass looks like it wants to lie down and give up. In an effort to offer some relief, we installed a misting system on the roof of the coop—a light, cooling spray to bring the temps down.

We expected gratitude. What we got was suspicion.

The moment the mist starts, the chickens stop. They pause. They look at each other. They cock their heads like, “Did you just feel that? Was that...weather again?”

Then? They run back inside. Because clearly, the coop is the safe zone and the sky has lost its mind again. You can almost hear them yelling, “IT’S RAINING SIDEWAYS, RUN!”

Hot Days, Cold Shoulders
When it’s just plain hot—no rain, no mist, just sun that feels like it’s trying to cook your eyebrows—our girls go full diva mode. Wings out, beaks open, and that thousand-yard stare that says, “This is chicken abuse.”

They stand in the shade like grumbling retirees and give you the stink-eye until someone brings them something frozen. Preferably melon. Chopped. Delivered on a porcelain platter. By a rooster in a bowtie. (Still looking for that last part on Amazon.)

Weather Forecast: Cluckin’ Unpredictable

So if you’re new to backyard chickens, here’s your weather primer:

Rain: Flee! The apocalypse is nigh!

Mist: Suspicious sky juice. Flee anyway.

Sun: The Complaint committee convenes at noon.

Wind: Expect feathers, drama, and gossip.

Snow: Let’s not even go there.

And remember—whether it’s mist or monsoon, chickens will always make it about them. And honestly? They deserve it. They’re fabulous.
