Minorca – The Tall Drink of Water from the Balearic Isles
Named after the island of Menorca (yes, the spelling got Anglicized along the way), the Minorca is the largest and arguably most glamorous of the Mediterranean breeds. With a long, lean body, glossy black feathers, and a comb so showy it could double as a hat, this bird is elegance in motion.
Minorca hens are known for laying large, white eggs — not in industrial quantities like a Leghorn, but with enough flair to make you feel special every time one shows up in the nest box. Their upright stance and bold red face make them look constantly alert, like they’re judging the quality of your feed… and finding it passable.
These birds are hardy in heat, thrive in open spaces, and prefer free-ranging to being confined. They’re not overly cuddly, and they can be flighty (literally and figuratively), but they’re curious, smart, and self-sufficient.
They come in several color varieties — Black being the most iconic, but also available in White and Buff — and are often admired in show circles for their sharp looks and distinctively large white earlobes (yes, really).
