Jersey Giant – The Coop’s Gentle Goliath

You know how some chickens are dainty and delicate? Yeah, this isn’t one of them.

Meet the Jersey Giant — a bird so big, you’ll double-take when you see it strutting across your lawn like it’s got somewhere important to be and your garden gnome better move. Originally bred in New Jersey in the late 1800s as a potential replacement for turkeys, this breed was developed with one thing in mind: size. Big meals, big birds, big eggs… big everything.

This is chicken you don't mess with.

Created by John and Thomas Black (yes, really), the Jersey Giant was a response to the demand for large, meaty birds. And boy, did they deliver. Roosters can top out around 13–15 pounds, while hens aren’t far behind, clocking in at 10–12 pounds. Despite their hulking size, they’re known for being calm, sweet-tempered, and downright lovable — a bit like your neighbor’s enormous dog that thinks it’s a lap puppy.

Jersey Giants come in Black, White, and Blue, with the Black variety being the original and most striking, showing off an iridescent green sheen when the sunlight hits just right. They take a while to mature (patience is a virtue when you’re growing a dinosaur), but they’re steady layers of large to extra-large brown eggs once they get going.

These birds are hardy, both in cold and heat, though they appreciate a bit of extra space — not because they’re demanding, but because the laws of physics require it. They aren’t flighty (can’t really lift off with that cargo), and they make excellent additions to calm, family-oriented flocks.
